National Security Speaker Series

Wednesday, May 22, 2024 (5:00 PM - 6:30 PM) (MDT)

Description

Colorado Springs is home to nationally recognized national security leaders in private industry, retired Department of Defense Executives, and academia. The National Security Speaker Series is designed to provide a forum to connect our community to these experts to create an environment of shared understanding of global threats, industry trends, and innovation in the region. Held Quarterly.

This series will discuss the comparison between military and civilian space assets. The speakers listed below, will be Cyber, Space & Intelligence Coordinators from Space ISAC.

Joel Francis:

Job Title: Watch Center Lead & Intelligence Coordinator

Bio: I have leveraged my background in technical writing and information design in the threat intelligence field and enjoy building unique insights on the threat landscape for the space industry. Through my work at the Space ISAC, I communicate with space subject matter experts from across the world to track threats to space systems and facilitate information sharing across the space sector. As the lead of the Space ISAC's Watch Center, I track trends and significant activity regarding threats to the space community.

Education: BA in English; Emphasis in Technical Communication and Information Design (TCID). University of Colorado Springs

What You’ll Be Covering: The growing commercialization of space has expanded the attack surface dramatically, which drives the need for robust information sharing and standards development for the security of critical space systems.

Marcus Graham:

Job Title: Fellow Cyber Analyst

Bio: I am a part of the fellowship program at Space ISAC and am a Signals Junior Analyst as well. I have been with the Space ISAC for 10 months now and before joining Space ISAC I had no experience or knowledge of the cybersecurity & space domain field. It was through the fellowship program that Space ISAC offers and that I am a part of that I have found a passion and home within the space industry.

Education: I am in Graduate School at UCCS, completing my Master's Degree in Criminal Justice.

What You’ll Be Covering: The myriad of threats against the space sector pit both commercial and private satellite operators against one another. A new space race in conjunction with the current space race widens the potential political, diplomatic, economic, and military implications associated.

Hector Falcon:

Job Title: Cyber, Space and Intelligence Principal Integrator

Bio: I currently am a part of the staff here at the Space ISAC, and have been here for almost two years now ever since retiring from the USAF/USSF in ‘22. During my 26-year military career, I spanned the following disciplines that I’ve been steadily embedding into our educational pathway: radio, signals, cyber, intelligence and space. With the ongoing convergence of domains, technologies, conduits and thought processes the adversarial landscape is ever-evolving. And through information sharing of incidents, threats plus vulnerabilities across the global space industry we can stay closer to “the what do I know currently” with regards to grey space elements.

Education: Master of Science, with a focus on Information Technology, Business and Strategy

What You’ll Be Covering: How many operational payloads are there on orbit? And do you really know who is involved let alone what (organizations/companies/entities or governmental components) the interlaced threat landscapes look like?
